I found a really useful and informative article that listed 'The 50 Best Film Openings of All Time', it includes a wide range of genres and styles which will be invaluable sources of information and will hopefully serve as inspiration when it comes to making our film opening. Although I have not seen most of the films on the list, it did include one of my favourite film openings, from 'Reservoir Dogs' directed by Quentin Tarantino. Below are two clips as I couldn't find one of the entire opening:
It is one of my favourites because it is very slow paced - a group of 'friends' having breakfast at a diner and having conversations about trivial things in a light-hearted manner, this is in stark contrast to the seriousness of the rest of the film. There isn't a lot of action in the scene and doesn't give away a lot (if any) clues about how the story will progress, instead, through their interactions we learn almost everything we need to know about the characters, their personalities and relationships with each other. I really like the pan around the table shot as we get to see all of the characters, I also like the over the shoulder shots and the fact that the screen goes completely black for a couple of seconds as we pan round, this puts the focus on the (meaningless) dialogue as there are moments with no visuals, this creates an interesting viewing experience.
